Music for the Cathedral - Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 8:00 PM
The Fairfax Choral Society Adult Chorus, and the Washington Symphonic Brass
with Paul Skevington, Organist

Ever since medieval times, composers have taken advantage of the splendid architecture and reverberant acoutics of great cathedrals in creating sacred music to the glory of God. 16th century Venice saw this art taken to new heights by musicians who used the organ lofts, balconies and the immense size of St. Mark's Basilica as a stage for multiple choruses and instrumental ensembles. In 19th century Paris, "grande" pipe organs built at either end of the city's enormous cathedrals were played simultaneously with brass and percussion to accompany the sacred choral works composed for these magnificent spaces. The Fairfax Choral Society Adult Chorus, and the Washington Symphonic Brass will join together with organist Dr. Paul Skevington to recreatet he glorious splendor of some of the world's most thrilling cathedral music in this unique concert including sacred works of Gabrielli, Kashka, Vierne, Boulanger, Rutter and more.
